Core concept

Talent Ceiling

The Talent Ceiling is the maximum revenue a business can produce given its current roster, regardless of how much it invests in process, tools, training, or marketing. Every business has one. Training doesn’t raise it enough. Upgrading the roster does.

The question it answers

What's our growth potential with our current team?

Use it when
  • Revenue has plateaued.

  • Reps are making more excuses.

  • Turnover is high in certain departments.

It’s the wrong tool when
  • Growth is happening smoothly.

  • Profits are strong.

  • Turnover is low.

Chart: revenue rises and flattens just under a dashed line labeled Talent Ceiling. A second line labeled roster upgrade breaks through to a higher level.

“In most sales teams the top 20% produce 80% of the revenue. The bottom 50% produce the excuses.”

“A business will only grow to the skill or belief level of the owner, whichever is lower.”

Bottleneck Breakthrough, Chapter 14

Where owners get it wrong

The Achilles heel of most small business owners is their loyalty. They assume that just because someone has been with the company for a long time, that they deserve to maintain employment forever. Unfortunately, most employees can't grow past two revenue plateaus and continue to deliver value to the company. But, owners think that providing enough training and investing in each team member will deliver worthwhile results over time.
